North Manchester Hospital’s new coffee offer brews up a storm!
The North Manchester Hospital is delighted at the results of the recent launch of Kenco bean to cup and instant coffee range in their restaurant.
With the continued rise in consumer expectation for speciality coffee, driven by the High Street, Julie Leonard, Trust Catering Manager, was fully aware of the fierce competition she was up against to capture every coffee moment within the hospital. For the last 9 years the restaurant has only provided consumers with an instant coffee option. Julie was conscious to meet consumer expectations with a new offer, whilst maintaining existing business in the busy 12-hour operation serving over 700 drinks per day.
The answer for the ideal product and equipment package was introduced in partnership by Kenco and General Vending Services (GVS). Whilst both companies have a strong heritage in working with the public sector, they also have the advantage of contracts with OGCbuying.solutions and NHS PASA. This would ensure that the new offer would deliver great Bean to cup speciality drinks, whilst being extremely reliable and offering a great return on investment.
“Previously, the Hospital had a cup cost of around 15p, but purchasing machines through GVS and ingredients through Kenco meant that their cup cost is now around 5p – a 75% saving on each cup!”

The result of the move to a Kenco Duo machine delivering both Bean to cup and instant coffees has ensured consumer satisfaction, despite a 10% increase in price. In fact, since the change in coffee offer, the overall restaurant spend has increased by 25%. Over half of coffee sales are Bean to cup drinks, and since its introduction coffee sales have increased by 8%. A great result for everyone!
Overall the move has been warmly received. The equipment is both easy to use and easy to clean, it looks great with a range of quality drinks, coupled with excellent marketing support for signage and point of sale materials to maximise consumer visibility.
